Quick Fly By ... Literally!

Posting right now from my plane on my way to Orlando (yes, this is VERY cool!)). I am feeling really good today. Very little soreness from my run yesterday. I am actually considering getting in a short run tomorrow morning. I will be at Pop Century and while they don't have a fitness center, there are areas where I can run. I am a little concerned about how my feet will hold up though. Also, I got like 3 1/2 hours of sleep last night. (Not surprising; I can never sleep the night before a trip.) I will see how I feel in the morning when my alarm goes off at 5am. LOL

Day 72 4/27/2010

Got in an awesome workout this afternoon! Since this might be my only workout this week, I wanted to challenge myself. I increased the incline to 1.5% for the first 10 min, increased my speed for the last half, and followed next week's schedule. I got in 14 min of running. This is basically the half way point for me. I am seriously considering pushing the program a little and skipping a week here and there. We will see :)

Week 10 Recap

Well, I had no change in weight this morning. I feel like I am retaining a lot of water, so I am happy with maintaining this week. The past week was kind of up and down. I leave for WDW this coming Wednesday, so I am interested to see how my calorie burn looks with all that walking. :) I probably will not get my runs in on Thurs or Sat, but we will see how I feel.

Day 69 4/24/2010

It was one of those dreary, lazy Saturdays. The temps was cool with periodic rain/drizzle and I was tired...all day. I get those days once every 3-4 months when I just feel run down and all I want to do is sleep.; which I did yesterday...a lot. I took a nap mid-morning and then pretty much laid about the rest of the afternoon. I was feeling better at about 5 and I decided I had better get my run in before the feeling went away. I got started and was still feeling good after my warm up, so I decided to test myself and see how long I could run without walking. I walked 2 min and then started running. I went slow, but I hit 7 min. I was still feeling pretty good and I could have done more, but I decided to walk a couple of minutes and then run the remaining 5 in a single set and then walk the rest at a good pace. Heh, well...my energy plummeted once I started walking again. I walked 2 min and started running again. I got 2 min in and had to walk. I was only half way through my workout and I was already beat. Those last 15 min were among the hardest I have done. I really had to force myself through it. I did cut my cool down short though. My calorie burn was a whole lot lower than normal too.

Lesson learned; guess these things really can only be learned from experience. I know that fuel is needed for exercise, but I underrated its importance since I am still only at 30 min (well, 45 with warm up and cool down) and my pace is still slow (I was at 4.5 but had to slow down to 4.0 when I increased the incline). Obviously I don't need to fuel up like I might for a race, but I cannot perform well if I am on empty. Performance is important for improvement and calorie burn.

Day 65 4/20/2010

Wow! Holy calorie burn Batman! I moved to a new location at work today. I am in a different building and a different floor. Most of my department is still in the other building. I had to make the trek over there three times after I moved! Also, my new location is much farther from the parking garage. LOL, at least the additional calorie burn is nice.

I had a great run as well. I made the transition to running every other minute (previously it was run 1 min, walk 2, then repeat). This week was 12 minutes running; I walked the last 5 min since my workout is 30 min. It was definitely challenging, but I did it!

Week 9 Recap

Woohoo! Another 3 pounds gone!

I had two NSVs (Non-Scale Victory) this weekend. First, I now am fitting into my new Lane Bryant jeans. They are just a little snug when I first put them on, but then they stretch just enough to be perfect. Yay! I am still a few pounds over where I got to last year, but my size is actually smaller.
Second, on Saturday, I fit into the theater seats without my hips being crammed into each side! That felt so amazing!

Day 63 4/18/2010

AWESOME workout today! I have decided that the Sauconys that I got last week are not right for me. I wore my NB 805s and the difference was simply amazing. I had no pain at all during my running segments. The entire workout felt amazing. With the Sauconys, I had pain within seconds in my ankles, knees, and feet. I am hoping I will be able to take them back.

Day 62 4/17/10

Was feeling really tired all day, so I decided to postpone my C25K workout until Sunday. Tim and I went to see Kick Ass with Mike and Sarah. It was AWESOME! We went to a new Mexican restaurant for dinner. I really did not care for it much. I may have over-estimated the calories for it, but better over than under.

Day 60 4/15/2010

Ok, so it was not my intention to have such a high deficit today. I just was not very hungry; especially after my treadmill workout. I even ate ice cream just to get my calorie count up a bit more!

I got in a great walk in the morning; the weather was perfect to walk outside and I walked longer than originally expected. I also got in a great C25K workout. It was much, much better than Tuesday. I still have to go a bit slower on the running portion since the incline is higher, but I am not too worried about speed right now. I am feeling it in different muscles than I used to, which is not surprising.

I ad a fairly decent day. It was Wednesday, so work was stressful. I was deperate for chocolate after lunch, so I got a KitKat from the vending machine. Then, in my last meeting of the day, Irmgard brought in cookies from Panera. I was not able to resist and so I had a chocolate chipper cookie. I knew how many calories there were, but I did not care. Luckily, I had a good workout at Panera and had a good calorie burn. My deficit was still decent, so I am happy.

Day 58 4/13/2010 Rough Workout...

Legs were feeling normal again, so I decided to go ahead with my planned C25K workout. It was a bit different this time though. I have decided to increase the incline to 1%. I am not really sure why I did not do this from the start. I knew from my research on running that adding the 1% incline helps to add difficulty to a treadmill workout to make it more similar to running outdoors. I think I just did not truly believe that it would be all that much harder to run outside vs on a treadmill. That, and I think I was a little afraid that adding the incline would make it too hard for me to get through my workouts.

Anyway, based on the suggestions from multiple folks, and the lessons learned on Saturday, I had the incline at 1% when I got started. The warm up went fine, though I did feel soreness in my legs so I knew that I would need to take it easier throughout the workout. This week is 20 min walking and 10 min running. I am still running in 1 min segments. This time I was running 1 min and waling 2 min and then repeating the cycle. The first running segment was painful...enough that I was really worried that I would not be able to get through it all. I did get through it, but I had to go much slower than normal and I had pain on each segment.

The combination of 1. recovering from shin splints, 2. new shoes, 3. increased incline, and 4. increase in run time made this workout one of the hardest, if not THE hardest in the last 10 weeks. I did lots of stretching afterwards. I had a raid in WOW and had to sit for several hours after; my hamstrings tightened up a little, but not too much. I had a little soreness when I went to bed, but it was just soreness, not any real pain.

When I was researching shin splints (yes, I research everything...sometimes too much), I found several exercises for strengthening specific muscles that will help prevent shin splints. I will be looking again at lunch today and printing those off. I used to get pretty bad shin splints when I was a kid. This past case was really mild, but I do not want that to happen again.

Week 8 Recap

I am now down 11 pounds! It was a really good week. I was very careful about what I ate and had some great workouts. I will try to repeat that this coming week and hope for the best. It does, however, look like I will need to skip Curves Monday. I want to really give my legs time to recover.

An Impulse 5K - Lessons Learned

Well, Saturday was certainly interesting. I decided to do a 5K. A couple of days ago, while I was looking at a website for a local running store, I saw that the American Cancer Society Run/Walk was taking place this weekend. TDS used to sponsor this and paid the entry fee for any employee who wanted to participate. They stopped doing it last year (lack of interest I think), but I had done it all the prior years.

I thought about registering the day of the event, but wasn't really sure if I should. Well, yesterday morning, I woke up and decided I would go. I showered, put on my workout clothes, new shoes, and put some music on my new Sansa mp3 player (it is tiny and I love it). I headed out to Warner Park, registered, and waited for the event to start (about an hour since I had gotten there early).

My plan had been to follow my normal scheduled workout plan, which included 8 min of running. Well....it did not quite go as planned. See, I have never run outside before. Since I started this two months ago, I have only used the treadmill. I knew that running outside would be different, but I was not sure how different. I have heard some people say it is harder to run outside, and others say it is easier. Well, it was most definitely harder for me. It did not help that we had a strong wind (other than that the weather was perfect). I was able to run 4 one minute segments. I just was not able to do anymore than that. I tried, but it was too much.

Even though it was harder to run, I was able to really push myself on the walking. I actually beat my previous best pace. It was 17:27, but my average on Saturday was 16:46! I actually did the first 2 miles in 32 min, which is a 16:00 pace!

Towards the end of the walk, my feet were hurting a bit, but other than that and being tired, I was feeling pretty good. When I crossed the finish line, I headed over to the food/water stand for some water. After I slowed down, my leg muscles started quivering. That has never happened after my treadmill workouts. I drank a bunch of water, stretched a little and then headed home.

Here comes the BIG MISTAKE!
I had noticed that Valvoline was having a one day special for $19.99 oil changes. I really, really needed to have mine changed and so I decided to stop on my way back home. I thought I would get a "quick" oil change and then go home to eat lunch. OMG! I waited in line for nearly an hour and a half!!!!!!!!!!!!! The whole time, sitting in my car. At least it was a really nice day out and I had the windows down and radio on.

Unfortunately, what I did not realize at the time was that as I was sitting in my car, my muscles were tightening up. When I finally got home and got out of the car, my legs HURT!! I don't mean they were just a little sore, it hurt to move! I barely got up the stairs. And, I hurt all day. I tried to do some stretches throughout the day, but the damage was already done.

Also, I was really tired the rest of the day. I think that might have been because I only ate a small amount for breakfast. I had a banana and half a bagel...and then did not get lunch until almost 2pm.

Today (Sunday), I am feeling much better, but I do have some soreness still in my legs and I have mild shin splints.

So, overall I am glad I did it, even though I learned several lessons the hard way.

Lessons Learned:
1. Eat a decent breakfast before a race and have a snack with me for after the race.
2. Bring water with me; there might not be any water stations along the route (like on Saturday).
3. It is harder to run outside (at least for me). My goals need to be more conservative than they would be on a treadmill.
4. When I am not on a treadmill, it is really hard to determine what pace I am walking/running at until I pass a mile marker. I need to learn how to pace, otherwise, I am likely to overdo it (which I think I did on Saturday).
5. Recovery after a race takes longer than after a normal workout. I need to stretch more, and take my time before leaving.
6. Do not sit for a long period of time after a race.

Well, I finally decided that it was time to get new shoes, so I went to Endurance House, which was recommended by several of my coworkers. It was pretty neat. They did a footstrike analysis which showed that I have more of a neutral strike. Apparently, everyone needs a bit of pronation, which helps dissipate the impact through the foot. I only pronate a tiny bit, and so I needed a shoe with extra cushioning to absorb the impact. I got a pair of Saucony Ride 2 and I really like them :)

Today was a good day. Work went by fast and I was able to get a morning walk in. Had a good treadmill workout, but when I finished my last running segment at 24 min, I hit something on the display that reset everything. Ugh...and I had been doing better than Tuesday. I had been hoping to see a pace improvement again, but I lost it all. :( Oh well, I just copied what my Tuesday distances were and I will try again on Saturday.

Day 52 4/7/2010

Somewhat decent day. I woke up feeling great, but then along came my weekly Wednesday 9am conversion meeting. Those always seem to sap all my energy, and today was the same. I was tired the rest of the day. I got in a good 15 min walk at work. I almost did not make it to Curves though. I was tired and just wanted to go home and veg the rest of the evening. I had to stop by Walgreens after work to get Tim some allergy medicine. As I got to the doors, I noticed the sign that said "All Easter products at least 50% off!". Well, I LOVE Peeps! So, I decided that if they had any Peeps left, then I would buy one package and go to Curves. Guess what? They had one package left; I ate 2 on the way to Curves and 2 after :)

Well, deficit was very high today, but that is what I was aiming for. I want to do this several more times this week just to see what effects it will have. Had a good C25K workout. I am up to 8 min running and 22 min walking, not including warm up or cool down. My toe actually hurt a little on this run, but not a lot.

Week 7 Recap

Well, I am missing several days worth of posts. It was a bit of a rough week. Stress at work is through the roof. On top of that, it was that time of the month and so my cravings were through the roof! We ate out quite a bit and I made brownies this weekend...and ate most of them. Ugh! At least I kept up with my workouts.

Anyway, I am not going to worry about it and start fresh on Monday. I talked to Tim and told him that I need his help. I want to avoid any and all fast food and eating out for the next three weeks. I only want to eat what I can accurately record. We really need to cut back on our spending anyway.

I finally went to the Dr about my toe. It is broken. He said, however, that if working out has not been causing pain in my toe, I am ok to continue. He said that the impact from running is focused on the ball of the foot and larger toes. The little toe only comes into play with something like trail running, when there are variations in terrain.

Day 45 3/31/10

I really dislike the end of each quarter. We have a lot of SOX requirements we have to meet at work that revolves around end of quarter. Today was absolutely crazy. I did not get a chance to walk at work at all. I did get in a good Curves workout. I had to force myself to go though. The weather has been absolutely FABULOUS; I just wanted to go home and relax with all the windows open! I reminded myself that there will be times when I am unable to go (illness, etc), and so I when I don't have a valid excuse, I need to make sure I go.

I have learned not to ask Tim what we are doing for dinner at a time that I am famished...I tend to agree with anything. So, last night we went shopping and ate dinner at Outback. I love Outback and if I had stuck to my usual, it would have been fine, but nooooo...I was STARVING at that point so I ordered Aussie Cheese Fries...probably the worst thing on the menu after the Bloomin Onion. We at least ordered the small one. I also ordered the Outback Special 6oz, salad w/thousand island dressing, and green beans. Oh, and I should mention that Tim met me for lunch earlier and we had HuHot (though I was pretty good and really watched my portions).

So, after all of this, I was just hoping I was even for calorie burn and consumption. Turns out that some of my assumptions were wrong. Outback has detailed nutritional values on their website. Since I only ate about half my other food after those cheese fries, and we got in all that extra walking from shopping, I actually ended up ok! (well, except for some gastrointestinal revolts due to all the extra fat I consumed...)
