I'm back!

Well, It has been a while. Not sure why I "gave up" on the blogging. It was really helping me to stay on track. I think life got too busy and blogging kept slipping my mind. Sometimes I think that my brain can only fit so much in it and when it gets too full, it starts dumping things.

I am still vegetarian and still loving it. I did have a bit of an issue that reared its ugly head in August. I was not careful enough about tracking my nutrition and neglected my iron intake. As a result, I became anemic. This really affected my training. I was tired all the time and never felt well. Once my Dr told me what was happening, it took a couple of weeks to find a vitamin that had enough iron and would not make me sick. I finally found that Flinstones chewables are the best for me. It took another month before I really felt normal again.

Work has also been absolutely crazy! Lots and lots of stress there. Unfortunately, I am a stress eater and so my calorie intake has been very high. Luckily, since I tried my best to keep up some training, I did not gain any weight, but I did not lose any either.

I decided to go with the Jeff Galloway training program. I am following his interval recommendations. I am slightly off from the schedule, but will be fully back on schedule next week. I did 5 miles 2 weeks ago, a 10K last week, and then 8 miles today.

Well, that is about it for the full update :)

7/12/10 I love being vegetarian!

Well, I have now been meat-free for two weeks and I am LOVING it! I feel better than I have in years. I have more energy and I actually feel happier. It seems odd that a change in how I eat would make a difference in my emotional state, but it really seems to have done just that. I also love that I can eat so many of the things I love like rice, couscous, beans, etc. Since the calories in each meal are typically quite a bit lower than those including meat, I am able to make certain changes and/or additions which make the food taste better and are often healthier. For example, I can cook more often using olive oil rather than cooking spray. I can include cheese a little more often.

I have also been able to add in treats a bit more often. YAY!!! Real Ice Cream!

Tim and I have both noticed a huge increase in our levels of satisfaction with our meals. We stay fuller longer. I am eating far less between meals now; normally just a piece of fruit and a granola bar mid-afternoon so that I have energy for my after-work workout. I have had far fewer sweet cravings than I normally do. The only problem I have experienced is getting enough calories!

My initial reasons for becoming vegetarian were primarily health based. The ethical and environmental benefits were just "bonuses". That balance has gradually shifted as I have done my research. It is now pretty equal between all three. The things I have read about conditions of animals as well as the amount of pollution generated and resources used in the meat industry, are shocking and most times completely revolting. I am more and more certain that this is a permanent lifestyle change. I just cannot look at a steak the same way ever again.

As a side note, I am finally up to where I was at towards the end of May with my running. It has taken longer than I hoped to get back, but now I am ready to move forward again!

7/1/2010 Day? Who knows....

Wow, I have really neglected my blog. This was mainly due to a lack of motivation. I got really discouraged after injuring my adductor muscles and after an extended "break" to let them heal, it was really, really hard to get back into the swing of things.

I am back now! And more motivated than ever. Unfortunately, I am also a month behind now. I have had some big changes recently though that should hopefully help get me back on track.

1. Team AllEars 2011
I am so excited that I was accepted to become a part of this team. This is an awesome group of folks who are gathering together to help each other to achieve the goal of participating in the 2011 WDW Marathon Weekend.

2. Me? A vegetarian? Yep!!
Tim and I have made the decision to become vegetarians. I feel so good about this decision. It has been 3 days and the only meat I have eaten were a few mini bagel dogs. We were planning on a gradual conversion, but I am ready to go now! :) Tim isn't quite ready to give away all the meat in our freezer yet though.

Our reasons are the standard ones for this type of change. Health, ethical, environmental, etc. It is hard to say whether one reason was greater than the others for me. They are all pretty equal. For Tim, it is primarily ethical and environmental.

So, hopefully it is back to full speed ahead. I probably won't post daily like I was trying to do...we will see though. :)

Another super hungry day. Also, I walked half a mile during lunch at work and my legs were screaming at me. I could barely get up the stairs when I got home. I had to skip my run. :( I rested on my recliner all evening and they felt better when I went to bed. Hopefully I will be good to run on Thursday.

Day 92 5/17/10

Calories Burned: 2601
Calories Consumed: 2082
Deficit: 519

Ugh. I am super hungry lately. It just did not seem like i could get enough to eat today. Also, my legs were really hurting from my run on Sunday, so I had to skip Curves...

Return from Never Never Land

Ok, so I really had not intended to neglect the blog for so long. I really did not want to spend any time on the computer while I was on vacation and then I kept forgetting once I got back. Vacation always throws me off my normal routine for a couple of weeks. I finally got back into tracking my food this past Friday. That was what, three weeks? Egads.

I had a great trip to Walt Disney World. Burned lots of calories and ate lots of calories. Bought way more stuff than I should have. Did some things that I had not done before. It was HOT, but tolerable once the morning humidity burned off. Feet did great; very few problems. :) Looking forward to my next trip. That probably won't be until January for the Half. Seeing how hard it was to get back into gear after this one, I think I will avoid any trips until the race.

I have finally made the transition to running outside. I found a great segment of the Capitol City Trail. Last Thursday went great, but I did overdo it a bit. I gave myself an extra recovery day and ran Sunday instead of Saturday. That one HURT. A lot. I am not sure why it was so difficult. I did get through it though. I am trying to decide whether I should run on the treadmill on Tuesday or hit the trail again. It hurts to walk today, so perhaps the shock absorption of the treadmill would be helpful.

I will start posting daily again tomorrow morning once I have today's numbers.

Quick Fly By ... Literally!

Posting right now from my plane on my way to Orlando (yes, this is VERY cool!)). I am feeling really good today. Very little soreness from my run yesterday. I am actually considering getting in a short run tomorrow morning. I will be at Pop Century and while they don't have a fitness center, there are areas where I can run. I am a little concerned about how my feet will hold up though. Also, I got like 3 1/2 hours of sleep last night. (Not surprising; I can never sleep the night before a trip.) I will see how I feel in the morning when my alarm goes off at 5am. LOL
